Why You Should Spend More Time Thinking About Dehydration

Dehydration is one of the most common preventable medical conditions in the world, and affects millions in the United States alone.   • Thirst means that you are dehydrated. Dehydration triggers the body’s thirst response. In many experiments, just 1 to 2% has been shown to trigger the thirst response. This level can happen quickly, especially following intense workouts or battling viruses.

  • Dehydration causes foggy memory, irritability, and more. Dehydration, even a mild case, has been shown to put stress on cognitive functioning. Dehydration can be linked to dips in concentration and short-term memory, as well as increases in feelings of anxiety and irritability. Studies in children have shown that hydration can improve attention and memory.

  • Dehydration is one of the most common risk factors for kidney stones. In a study conducted in 1990, the causes of kidney stones was examined in more than 700 patients. Chronic dehydration was believed to be a factor in about 20% of the cases studied.

  • Hydration can boost your metabolism. One study found that drinking cold water helped boost healthy men’s and women’s metabolic rate by 30%. The reasoning for this is that the body expended more energy heating the cold water, resulting in a metabolic boost.

There are three types of dehydration:

  1. Mild dehydration is the loss of no more than 5% of the body’s fluid.

  2. Moderate dehydration is the loss of 5-10% of the body’s fluid.

  3. Severe dehydration is the loss of 10-15% of the body’s fluid and is a life threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Common Causes of Dehydration Include:

  • Illness

  • A hot, dry climate

  • Prolonged exposure to sun or high temperatures

  • Not drinking enough water

  • Overuse of diuretics or other medications that increase urination

  • Strenuous activity

  • Excessive sweating

  • High fever

  • Prolonged vomiting or diarrhea

Other conditions that can lead to dehydration include:

  • Disease of the adrenal glands, which regulate the body’s water and salt balance and the function of many organ systems.

  • Diabetes mellitus- Type 2 diabetes

  • Eating disorders

  • Kidney disease

  • Chronic lung disease

Complications associated with dehydration:

When the body’s fluid is severely depleted, hypovolemic shock (physical collapse) is likely to occur. Hypovolemic shock is characterized by pale, cool, clammy skin; rapid heartbeat; and shallow breathing. Blood pressure can sometimes drop so low that it can not be measured, and skin on the knees and elbows may become blotchy. Anxiety, restlessness and thirst increase. Once the body’s temperature reaches 107°F (41.7°C) damage to the brain and other vital organs occurs quickly.

Symptoms of dehydration can include cracked lips, dry or sticky mouth, dry throat, lack of tears, dizziness, fatigue, mental confusion and cramps. The skin becomes less elastic than normal and is slow to return to it’s normal position after being pinched.

Proper hydration is key to maintaining good health. Water is necessary for the body to digest and absorb vitamins and nutrients. It is also necessary for proper digestion; it detoxifies the liver and kidneys and carries waste away. Failure to drink enough water can lead to many medical conditions including fatigue, joint pain, weight gain, headaches, ulcers, high blood pressure, kidney disease; and if severe enough, even death.
